Forces Help To Buy Scheme

The Forces Help To Buy Scheme was launched in April 2014 to help servicemen and servicewomen get on the property ladder. The scheme enables forces personnel to borrow up to 50% of their salary, interest free to buy their first home or move to another property.

The total amount that you can borrow through the scheme depends on your earnings. The current loan amount is 50% of your annual salary with a maximum loan of £25,000.

Before applying, it’s important to know that there are some rules for using the Forces Help to Buy Scheme. The five key criteria that you must meet include:

  • You must have served for 2 years

  • You must have more than 6 months of service left when you apply

  • The property you wish to buy must be in the UK or the ROI if you are recruited there

  • You cannot be a reservist or Military Provost Guard

  • You cannot have drawn any terminal benefits

Applying for the Forces Help to Buy Scheme is quite a simple process. The recommended method is to apply for the loan through the Joint Personnel Administration system. If you require additional advice on applying or wish to know more about the status of your application then you can speak with your Chain of Command and personnel agency.

Once you have applied for the loan you will need to think about applying for a mortgage.
